Tip of the Month (November 2007) Migrating to the New mEnable You may want to migrate to the new release of mEnable to take advantage of all the new features, but it may be difficult to upgrade everything (your server and all the devices) all at the same time. Luckily, you don't have to. The new version of the mEnable server is 100% backward compatible with the older version. This means that the older mEnable clients can be used with the newer mEnable server without any modifications, updates, etc. It is perfectly "safe" to update the mEnable server first and then update the mEnable clients as you can. It is "safe" if some of the clients are using the older mEnable and some are using the newer mEnable. You will, of course, have to upgrade the clients in order for the clients to take advantage of the mEnable features, but there is no need to take down your system while you do this upgrading. The only thing you have to be careful about is that you don't use the new mEnable clients with an old mEnable server. This will cause problems...but these problems can be easily remedied by just installing the new mEnable server. So, upgrading to the new mEnable is simple: install the new server first and then, as you can, upgrade the handhelds. |
