Report CE FAQ

Report CE software adds reporting, printing, and graphing capabilities to mobile database applications

R1-a) Other than Report CE®, what do I need to create a report template?

If you have a Windows CE device and a desktop PC with any Microsoft Windows operating system installed, you have everything you need.

Your Windows CE device came with a CD that had the Windows CE desktop connectivity software (ActiveSync and/or Windows Mobile Device Center). Make sure this is installed on you PC before installing Visual CE.

At the time of this writing, download and setup instructions for ActiveSync and the Windows Mobile Device Center are also available from Microsoft.

Of course, you will need data to generate the report with. You can use a Visual CE form to enter the data, you can use a third party tool, or you can use data on your server (via our mEnable product).

R1-b) I'm not a programmer, will I be able to use Report CE?

Report CE was designed for people who are comfortable with computers, but are not necessarily programmers. If you can use a web browser (and you probably can since you are reading this), you can create report templates with Report CE.

R1-c) Does Report CE work with Microsoft Visual Basic, Visual C++, Visual Studio .NET?

Applications built with Microsoft Visual Basic, Visual C++, and Visual Studio .NET can launch a Report CE report just as you would any other third party executable.

You can control how the report is presented with command line parameters. You can also control what data is reported by setting Visual CE variables in your application. You do this by calling using the /a command line switch on the Visual CE runtime or Report CE runtime.

R1-d) Does Report CE work on Pocket PC devices? Windows Mobile Devices? P/PC devices? H/PC devices? H/PC Pro devices?

  • Report CE works on all Windows CE devices running Windows CE 3.0 or better.
  • Report CE works on all Pocket PC's, Smartphones, Windows Mobile, and H/PC Pro devices.
  • Report CE works on Windows CE 3.x, Windows CE 4.x, Windows 5.x devices, and Windows 6.x devices.

R1-e) What versions of Windows CE does Report CE work with?

  • Report CE works on all Windows CE devices running Windows CE 3.0 or better.
  • Report CE works on all Pocket PC's, Smartphones, Windows Mobile, and H/PC Pro devices.
  • Report CE works on Windows CE 3.x Windows CE 4.x, Windows 5.x devices, and Windows 6.x devices.

R1-f) What is the difference between the Personal Edition and Pro Edition of Report CE®?

The Pro Edition license allows you redistribute reports you design with Report CE® to third parties. This redistribution license is royalty free.

R1-g) How can I upgrade from Personal Edition to the Pro Edition?

Our current policy is that you can upgrade one edition to a higher edition by just paying the difference the price of the edition you want minus whatever you paid for the edition you have. For example, if you paid $79 for your Personal Edition, you can upgrade to the Pro Edition for just $220 ($299 minus $79). For more details, visit our upgrade information page.

R1-h) Does Report CE support color?

You can set the color on a control by control basis.

Report CE also allows you to "dress up" your report by putting color bitmaps on report.

R1-i) What does "royalty-free" pricing mean for Report CE?

Royalty-free pricing means you don't have to pay a separate fee for each handheld on which your report is running. This insures that anyone can inexpensively deploy mobile database applications. There are no per device fees required to deploy reports built with Report CE, unless they also use mEnable or sqlceEnable.

R1-j) Do you provide evaluation copies?

SYWARE is confident you'll like what you see with our family of database development tools. In case you're not sure, download the Report CE Evaluation Edition.

R1-k) Can you design forms on the desktop? On the handheld?

Reports can be built and modified on both the desktop and the handheld.

R1-l) Do the forms run on the desktop? On the handheld?

Reports usually run on the handheld (displaying data from the handheld).  Reports can also be run on the desktop (displaying data from the connected handheld)
